School Oratory (Speeches)

Hi, everyone!  I just wanted to connect with you regarding the School Oratory.  Each student has received a booklet outlining the speech-writing process.  Each student will be working on the pre-writing and rough draft stages of the speech this week, but students are encouraged to work on their speech at home, as well.  We have broken up the process into three parts, with three due dates (this helps us avoid doing everything at the last minute!):
Monday, February 13: Rough Draft is due
Friday, February 17: Final Draft is due
Tuesday, March 6, and Wednesday, March 7: Classroom Speak-Off (this is when students present their speeches in our classroom)
The top girl and boy will be chosen to represent our classroom in the School Oratory on Friday, March 30.
There is a form on the first page of the packet that indicates parents have viewed the speech assignment.  Please sign and return this, or send me an email or a note in your child's agenda.
Also, please let me know if you have any questions regarding the details of the assignment.

Book Swap!

We are having a Book Swap in the library on Tuesday, January 31.  Bring a book and trade it in for a new one!

Grade 6 Learns to Curl!

January Update

Hi, Parents,

Happy New Year!  I hope that you enjoyed a restful and refreshing holiday season with your family.
We are back into the swing of things in Grade 6!  Here is an update on what’s happening in our classroom this month:

Math- We are finishing up Unit 3 (Multiplying and Dividing Decimals) with the “Show What You Know” Review Assignment this week.  This needs to be finished by the end of tomorrow.  We will have our Unit Test on Tuesday, January 17.  All homework sheets should be complete and handed in by Friday.  I have Extra Practice Sheets printed off and available for students in the classroom.  If you would like me to email this  document to you, please let me know.

Reading-  On Tuesday, I introduced students to our Book Extravaganza Project.  Students need to choose a novel, complete the required assignments, as well as one major creative component.  They should have their book read by January 25, and the project is due on February 3.

Writing- We are working on writing our “Top Ten of 2011”, using a webtool known as Glogster.  Essentially, a “glog” is a multimedia poster created online.  Glogs are a lot of fun and they will be an excellent keepsake when finished!  If you have an internet connection at home, students can easily work on this project at home.  It is also “Cursive Handwriting Month” in Grade 6.  At the start of each day, students are working through a booklet to practice their handwriting skills. In February we will move on to typing!  Also, the “Inspiration Assignment” and Word Work is due tomorrow (Friday).

Science- We are excited about our new unit, Electricity!  FUN! This week we are starting things off with a study of static electricity.  If you have background knowledge you would love to share on the topic of electricity, we would be more than happy to have experts make an appearance!

Social- The Map Assignment and the Lost & Found Paragraph is due Monday (Mrs. Hognestad).

Phys. Ed.- In Phys. Ed. we are working on developing fundamentals in basketball, such as dribbling, shooting, passing, and lay-ups.  Now we are into game play.

On January 23 we will be going on a Science field trip to Boggy Creek.   This is such a fun day and we would love to have you join us.  If you are able to help out, please send me an email or note in your child’s agenda.  One of the highlights is learning to build a fire and then using it to cook our lunch!   I am sending home a letter today about our trip.  Please return the consent form as well as $4.50 for the bus to Boggy Creek.

I think that’s all for today!  As always, do not hesitate to send me an email or give me a call if you have any questions or concerns.
